Despite this nice woman’s sunny disposition, it was a little overshadowed by a larger cause. Leica Monochrom, 50mm APO-Summilux-Asph, orange filter.

Posted in Music with tags "Sleeper", Ty Segall on August 26, 2013 by johnbuckley100In a fun interview in the The New York Times, Ty Segall answers the question, “Why have you been so prolific?”
The answer is fun. “That’s just what I do. Half-needing to do it as an exercise of the mind, and half an exercise of a daily routine. That’s my job. When I was younger, it was more like: ‘I don’t know how long I’m going to be doing it for. I need to do as much as I can, because who knows when my luck will run out?’ It was more like a race, but now it’s different. It’s an exercise, therapy, my daily vitamins, my daily dose, and it’s kind of necessary for my brain. Dinner tastes better when you record a song. Just like when you work a hard day at a job, you know? Dinner’s going to taste better. It’s like any other routine. It’s good for your brain and your body.”
The Seriousness — And Joy — In Yesterday’s March On Washington

To herald its coverage of yesterday’s 50th Anniversary Of The March On Washington, The Washington Post uses one of the most beautiful sentences ever written by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “The arc of moral history is long, but it bends toward justice.” Along with the ever-present images of Trayvon Martin, it was a reminder of the seriousness of the occasion.
But yesterday’s march was as much filled with joy as protest. And there were reminders of how far as a nation we have come in 50 years.
Even as folks hawked photos of icons to the large, friendly crowd.
For many members of the largely African-American crowd, it was like a family reunion. It was a really lovely day.
Trayvon And The 50th Anniversary of The March On Washington

We expected the tee shirts and placards commemorating Rev. Martin Luther King and his speech delivered 50 years ago this week. But if there was anyone whose death hung over what otherwise was a gorgeous, happy summer day in the Nation’s Capital, it was Trayvon Martin.
More images posted tomorrow. Both images Leica Monochrom, 50mm APO-Summicron-Asph, orange filter.
Ty Segall’s “Sleeper” Is Fun, Inessential
Posted in Music with tags "Sleeper", Ty Segall on August 22, 2013 by johnbuckley100Longtime readers of Tulip Frenzy know that we consider Ty Segall the most fun thing that’s happened to rock’n’roll since, like, the Pixies. It doesn’t mean we have to love everything he does. Sleeper is the only record Ty’s released this year, though we eagerly await the debut of Fuzz, his power trio that will soon go out on tour in support of their October 1 album release. In days of yore, like when Dylan and the Beatles occupied a comparable position of importance to the broad space over which Segall so solidly dominates, there’d be listening parties in which acolytes would solemnly nod as the turntable spun that first play of some new record. These days we download a record like Sleeper and listen to it without much worrying that it portends much meaning. Yes, it is a (mostly) acoustic, often pretty album released by a tuneful punk rocker, but it’s not exactly like he’s gone off and joined a gorp-eating, tree-hugging cult or anything. It’s just a quiet record by a young man who writes songs easily. And given the dexterity and self-cloning called for to produce an album like last year’s Twins, in which he played all the instruments, turning the machine on while he picks and sings a little must have seemed like a vacation. This is not some weird detour, and it’s not hugely meaningful, though we acknowledge that it stems from a difficult time in his life when his (adopted) father died. It’s an entertaining summer release that will keep us amused until Fuzz enters our brains and cores out what’s left of the cortex.
This Is Entertainment

Leica M, Vario-Elmar-R 80-200 @80
There are evenings when people entertain themselves by watching television, or going online, or playing pinochle. And then there are nights when, with a minimum of searching, entertainment can be had by simply driving along a road with your eyes open.
Throughout the summer, there have been a few bulls to be seen off in the distance. And then there was the night when three came up close to the river, while a hundred yards away, a cow was to be seen with two calves. That’s entertainment.
We Can Do This At Night?

Hand held, an hour after sunset. Yes, the Blue Hour, as it is called. But still — never realized that a monochrome shot — not simply a Leica Monochrom shot — had this potential after the sun has set. Does make you wonder if some of those great Yosemite images by Ansel Adams (proper genuflection required) may have been shot at night… Wish we had the Lightroom skills to get rid of those trees in the way…
Woo Hoo! Kelley Stoltz’s “Double Exposure” September Release Date Set
Posted in Music with tags "Double Exposure", Jack White, Kelley Stoltz, Third Man Records, Yahweh on August 14, 2013 by johnbuckley100We thank you, Pitchfork, for giving us this listen to “Kim Chee Taco Man”, the first track we’ve heard from Kelley’s new ‘un, Double Exposure. (And a strong track it is! Ed.)
We thank you, Jack White, for having the taste and moxie to put out Kelley’s new album on Third Man Records.
We thank you, Yaweh in all Your many Manifestations for delivering Kelley Stoltz to us, and for the announcement that Double Exposure will be released to the world on September 24th. That’s…. (does some arithmetic… 24 + 17 days left in August…) only 41 days away! Woo hoo!
And why are we so excited about this album coming out, aside from the fact that Kelley has more than one time been listed in Tulip Frenzy’s Top 10 Lists ™? Well, here’s what no less an authority than Thee Oh Sees John Dwyer has to say about Double Exposure: “A piece of gold in your ear, A lovely thought in your mind, A breeze in the sun, This record is perfect…”
